"Quem desejar adquirir um conhecimento adequado da Medicina deve ter a posse das seguintes dádivas: uma disposição natural, instrução, uma inclinação favorável ao estudo, orientação desde cedo, amor ao trabalho e tempo ocioso. Antes de qualquer outra coisa, é necessário um talento natural, pois, quando a Natureza leva ao que é mais excelente, a instrução na Arte acontece. A instrução deve ser apropriada pelo estudante por meio da reflexão, ao tornar-se um pupilo o mais cedo possível num local adaptado ao ensino. Também deve trazer consigo um amor ao trabalho e perseverança, de tal forma que a instrução que se enraíza traga frutos dignos e abundantes."

"He who is going truly to acquire an understanding of medicine must enjoy natural ability, teaching, a suitable place, instruction from childhood, diligence, and time. Now first of all natural ability is necessary, for if nature be in opposition everything is in vain. But when nature points the way to what is best, then comes the teaching of the art. This must be acquired intelligently by one who from a child has been instructed in a place naturally suitable for learning. Moreover he must apply diligence for a long period, in order that learning, becoming second nature, may reap a fine and abundant harvest."
"Χρὴ γάρ, ὅστις μέλλει ἰητρικῆς σύνεσιν ἀτρεκέως ἁρμόζεσθαι, τῶνδέ μιν ἐπήβολον γενέσθαι· φύσιος· διδασκαλίης· τόπου εὐφυέος· παιδομαθίης· φιλοπονίης· χρόνου. πρῶτον μὲν οὖν πάντων δεῖ φύσιος· φύσιος γὰρ ἀντιπρησσούσης κενεὰ πάντα· φύσιος δὲ ἐς τὸ ἄριστον ὁδηγεούσης, διδασκαλίη τέχνης γίνεται· ἣν μετὰ φρονήσιος δεῖ περιποιήσασθαι, παιδομαθέα γενόμενον ἐν τόπῳ ὁκοῖος εὐφυὴς πρὸς μάθησιν ἔσται· ἔτι δὲ φιλοπονίην προσενέγκασθαι ἐς χρόνον πολύν, ὅκως ἡ μάθησις ἐμφυσιωθεῖσα δεξιῶς τε καὶ εὐαλδέως τοὺς καρποὺς ἐξενέγκηται."
